A downloadable game
This demo includes level 1, level 1B, level 1C, and the first boss. It's intended to gather feedback because what may be fun for me may not be so for everyone else. There's no proper ending and some of the graphics are placeholders, but this will of course change in the final release. I might also bundle a gameboy color version, but that's not a guarantee since the physics are complex, maybe a bit too complex to work on the gameboy color's much slower CPU, and the number of objects moving independently of the background may be higher than what the gameboy color supports.
Who's the voice actor for the tanooki character you may wonder? Well, here's the thing: there is none. It's AI. The game uses a mix of AI generated sound effects and Bfxr generated sound effects.
Getting the GBA to display everything turned out to be easy. Programming the engine was not. Jank here, jank there, jank everywhere, and I had to do a massive optimization to get it to handle anything I could possibly throw at it without glitches. It should be foolproof now though, no graphical glitches regardless of how many objects are on-screen or how big those objects are, or jank. Though the game can, very rarely, crash randomly and I haven't figured out why yet.
This game is inspired by celeste and made from the heart. It's not just a crappy celeste clone. The gimmick is the abilities that the tanooki protagonist has, which include dashing floating and wall climbing. An OP moveset for a platformer sure but the level design and boss design compensates for this by being more aggressive.
